Hand and Foot score sheet

To score a round of Hand and Foot, each side adds up the points of every card it melded, plus 500 for each clean book, 300 for each dirty book, 100 for each red 3 laid down and 100 for going out. Then it takes off the points of every card still in its players' hands and feet. Type those numbers in below for each round and the sheet keeps the running totals.

Count a red 3 left in a foot as 100 in the points left. Rounds past four are for groups that play longer games.

Card points count twice in a sense: the cards inside your books still add their own value on top of the book bonus. So a clean book of kings is worth 500 plus 70 for the seven kings.

A worked example

Round 1. Your side went out and has a clean book of kings (70 points of cards), a clean book of 6s (35), a dirty book of six 9s and a 2 (80), a dirty book of six 10s and a joker (110), and an unfinished meld of three aces (60). One red 3 is on the table. Nothing is left in your hands.

The other side has a clean book of queens (70), a dirty book of five 5s with a joker and a 2 (95), four 8s (40), and two red 3s. They're caught holding a joker, a king and a black 3.

Notice how much the books carry: 1,600 of the first side's 2,155. That's why the Hand and Foot strategy that wins is mostly about finishing books, clean ones above all.

Questions about scoring

Does the side that didn't go out still score its books?

Yes. Both sides score everything on the table. Going out earns 100 and ends the round, which leaves the other side holding cards that count against it.

How many rounds are there?

Four in the usual game, with first-meld minimums of 50, 90, 120 and 150. The highest total after round 4 wins. Some groups play to a target score instead; the sheet keeps going if you add rounds.

What if the stock runs out?

The round ends when someone needs to draw and can't. Both sides score as usual, and nobody gets the 100 for going out.

Our family scores red 3s differently. Can I still use this?

Yes, as long as you count them yourself: put red 3s worth something other than 100 into the points melded or points left. In the no-partner rules on pagat, for example, each red 3 you're caught with costs 500.

Is there a way to skip the adding up?
