Solving on paper

Write the letter you think a code letter stands for on the line above it, and then above every other copy of that code letter in the puzzle. A pencil helps; most solvers change their mind once or twice. Easy puzzles come with three letters already filled in, medium with one, hard with none.

Two habits make paper solving quicker. Count how often each code letter appears and write the count in the margin: the most common one is usually E or T. And keep a list of A to Z at the side, crossing letters off as you use them, so you don't use one letter for two codes. Our how to solve cryptograms page has the full method with a worked example.
