How Oh Hell is scored

With pagat's simplest scoring, the one our online game starts with, you score only when you take exactly the number of tricks you bid: 10 points plus your bid. Take one too many or one too few and you score nothing for that hand. A bid of 0 made is worth 10. Nobody ever loses points, and the highest total after the last hand wins.

Both columns come from pagat.com's Oh Hell page. The first is the one it describes first, as the simplest version, and it's also Bicycle's rule. The second, 1 point for every trick plus 10 for an exact bid, is the one pagat calls perhaps the most widespread. Pick one before you start; the sheet has both.

What a good score looks like

In 1,000 games between four of our strong computer players, with exact bid scoring over 19 hands, the winner finished on 140.5 points on average and the average player on 114.9. With three players the winner averaged 124.7. Scoring 1 a trick plus 10, four-player winners averaged 152.8. Those are computer players, so a table of people may land higher or lower.

Questions

Does it save my scores?

Yes, in this browser on this device, as you type. Nothing is sent anywhere. Clear scores wipes the numbers but keeps the names.

Why does a row say the hook rule bars it?

Under pagat's main rules the dealer, who bids last, can't make the bids add up to the number of tricks. If they do, the sheet flags the row so the dealer can change their bid. If your table doesn't play that rule, ignore the note.

How many hands are there?

Pagat's main rule starts with 10 cards each for 3 to 5 players, 8 for 6 and 7 for 7, goes down one card a hand to 1, then back up. That's 19 hands for 3 to 5 players, 15 for 6 and 13 for 7. The sheet sets the rows for your table, and can start with 1 card instead, or stop at 7.

Can the computer keep score for me?

In our online Oh Hell game every hand is scored for you. This sheet is for games with real cards. The full rules are on our how to play Oh Hell page, and the strategy guide covers how to bid.
